Just what makes a bakery kosher? The simple answer is that the bakery adheres to kosher dietary laws. The more complex answer is that the bakery follows the best practices to do so.

Background of kosher guidelines

Kashrus is the Hebrew word that refers to kosher and kosher applications. The laws are Biblical in origin and have guided the preparation of food for thousands of years. The key, today, is the application of those laws to modern situations and modern societies. This is done through interpretation by rabbinic scholars.

Kosher laws (kashrus laws) are extensive and complex. The fundamental rationale for the laws of kashrus is to conform to the Divine Will, expressed in the Torah.

Have you ever heard the expression “made from scratch”? It means to start out with “nothing” or just the raw materials and to make something out of it. But the truth is that you don’t really start out with “nothing”. You start out with knowledge and a desire to create something out of that knowledge and resources that you decide to acquire.

Baking from “scratch” What a scratch bakery means to us is that the baked goods are crafted on site.  Each day, ingredients are selected, prepared, combined, baked and sold generally in small lots.  You might even say that each particular product is nurtured, and you may not find the same selections of baked goods each and every day. There is nothing pre-made or bought premixed.

Some bakers might call their scratch bakery an “artisan” bakery, meaning that the baked goods and breads are created in the same painstaking way that an artist might create a one of a kind piece of art. Each loaf of...

Most people have heard about trans-fats as a dietary problem.  And when given choices between selecting foods without trans-fats, many health conscious people are learning to make smarter choices.

But when it comes to baking delicious kosher goods, is it possible to keep the quality and taste you love while abandoning the trans-fats?  The answer is a resounding yes!

The problem with trans-fats

The Food and Drug Administration and public interest groups have made trans-fats the number one enemy in nutritional health.  Trans-fats raise LDL cholesterol and many believe trans-fats are worse than saturated fats for good health. Public health officials believe these fats clog arteries and cause obesity. As a result there have been a number of cities that have banned the use of trans-fats, and the trend seems to be growing.

What are trans-fats

Trans-fats can be natural or artificial....

In recent years science has made great strides in teaching us a great deal about the various food allergies that people may develop.  One of the most serious food allergies many people face is to peanuts and is one of the reasons that Goldman’s is a peanut free bakery

Background on Peanut Allergies

While statistics about peanut allergies are difficult to narrow down, there is no doubt that peanut allergies can be a serious health problem to those who suffer from it. In certain severe cases, the reaction to peanut allergies can even be fatal. The problem is so severe that anyone with a peanut allergy who inadvertently consumes some peanuts or some form of a peanut problem should seek immediate medical attention.

The only treatment for an allergic reaction to peanuts is epinephrine (adrenaline).

Peanut allergy is one of the big eight food allergies. These eight foods account for over 90% of...

Why is it that all year long challah is braided, but for Rosh Hashanah it is round? What does the shape of challah mean? Find the answers rooted in tradition Every Jewish custom has deep and significant meaning, and the changing shape of challah and how it is served is one of them. During the rest of the year, challah is traditionally dipped in salt before distribution for a number of reasons.   But at Rosh Hashanah, challah is enjoyed with honey to signify an upcoming sweet year. Additionally, at Rosh Hashanah, apples may be dipped in honey and prayers are said for a good and sweet upcoming year. The shape of challah is a lesson about the holiday on which it is consumed. The Shabbat challah is braided. Part of preparing for the Shabbat is engaging in creative activity, and braiding is most definitely a creative activity. Braiding signifies the human ability to shape the world about us. But many believe that braiding is more than...

Probably at no point in American history has it been easier to enjoy high quality kosher products you can trust, no matter where you live. You might even live in a small, Western town and now you can still find the kosher products you want and need.

How is this possible?  The answer is simple. You can now use the internet to safely and securely buy your favorite kosher goods online.

Why buy online?

Perhaps, the most significant reasons to buy online are selection and availability. No matter if you live right down the street from a kosher store or in a remote, rural area hundreds of miles from one, you can find and buy what you want and need online.

There are thousands of kosher products available online from a wide variety of vendors. The technologies, the systems, processing, shipping, and billing are past the point of being “figured out” and the processes are very well established. Hundreds of thousands of individuals buy online without difficulties or problems, and today buying online is no different for the kosher shopper than it is for anyone buying a new computer or a pair of shoes online.
